Product Review: Twizzter Yarn Holder

This past Christmas I received this product as a gift from my husband. I think he got the hint after I sent him 17 links to this particular product. I’ve been seeing this item on social media - primarily in the knitting community - and I’ve been wanting one for some time. So, this Christmas, I finally got one: The Twizzter Yarn Holder.

The Twizzter Yarn Holder is a lightweight stainless-steal gadget that allows the knitter/crocheter to carry their yarn with them while working on a WIP (Work In Progress) without the yarn getting into a tangled mess, rolling away, or getting dirty. This product sounded perfect for someone like myself who goes on walks with their kids in warmer months and likes to bring a small WIP along. And yes, I’ve already taken my Twizzter Yarn Holder out for a test drive during one of our walks around the neighborhood.

I will be rating this product out of a 5-yarn skein scale. So, let's get to it!

The Company, Their Story & The Specs

The Twizzter Company is based in Sweden. The company does sell/ship their products worldwide and they have a list of retailers that sell their products on their website. See the list to find a retailer near you.

The company is owned and operated by two sisters who are pursuing their father’s legacy. Their father is the inventor behind the Twizzter Yarn Holder. The first Twizzter he made, according to the Twizzter website, was made for his wife who was struggling with knitting winter clothes for the family while raising their children.

Since the first Twizzter, the inventor’s children have added some changes to his original design. After many trials, they finalized the design which comes in two pieces and is lightweight for the knitter/crocheter. The design was patented in 2022. You can read the full story on their website.

The Twizzter Company does have a 30 Day Return and Full Refund policy. So, if you do not like the product, or it doesn’t work for you, you can return it in the first 30 days and will get your money back. Also, they have a Lifetime Warranty on their products, which is nice.

The cost of the Twizzter is $43.24 (USD). Considering the cost of knitting/crocheting tools, supplies, and notions. Spending $43 on this gadget is not bad at all. Especially when you consider the fact that the company gives 5% of their net profits to reducing emission projects. In a sense, by purchasing any of their products you are supporting the environment. And to add to their support of the environment, they look for ways to make shipping and packaging recyclable and biodegradable.

They do have other products besides the Twizzter Yarn Holder. They have the Twizzterpinne which is a yarn ball winding stick. The Twizzterpinne is 100% handmade by a craftsman in Sweden, it is made of recycled biodegradable material (including the paint), and it comes in two different styles/looks. Check out their website for information on the Twizzterpinne.

They also have an Instagram account: @twizztersizzters. And they do a fabulous job sharing, communicating, and answering questions about their products. From my own personal interaction with the TwizzterSizzters on Instagram, they are the nicest people ever. They are passionate about their products and they love seeing people use them. So go give them a follow! As of right now (2/9/24) they are a few hundred shy of 9k followers. And they are on YouTube with tutorials on how to use their products.

Packaging

I didn’t do an unboxing video or take pictures of the packing because it was a Christmas gift. But I will say, the packing was very simple because the product itself didn’t need any special packaging. But also, this company is working to make their packaging as environmentally friendly as possible. And for me, I am perfectly fine with simple packaging especially if it helps with the environment.

If you want to see what their packaging looks like, there are photos on their website.

Testing the Product/Personal opinion

I have been using this product for a month now and I am obsessed with it! As a mom of two boys, we are outside any chance we get. The Twister allows me to go on walks with my boys, cook dinner, travel (I was able to take this on the plane with me), and more! The possibilities are endless on where you want to take it. Or, you can even let it suspend on a hook, lamp, or whatever while you are knitting/crocheting.

This gadget allows me to change out WIPs easily. Because I am pulling the yarn from the outside and not the center pull.

Now you are probably wondering, why would I want to pull from the outside of the skein and not the center?

Let me explain.

Here in America, a vast majority of crafters pull their yarn from the center of the skein. Once we are done with the yarn, and there is still some leftover, we will wind it up in a ball, cake, or a new skein - depending on what tools and/or gadgets are at our disposal. Then, we do the same thing all over again. Pull from the center. Rewind the skein if there’s leftover yarn. Repeat. Pulling from the outside eliminates rewinding the skein. Thus, saving you time that you don’t have.

I know what some of you are going to say, “Amanda, the yarn doesn’t run away from us when we pull from the center.” True. But as someone who has kids and dogs, the yarn can still run away. It’s only a matter of when.

The Twister is also lightweight and doesn’t put pressure on your joints. Now, I do have a backpack that is specific for traveling with my knitting and crocheting. It’s a great bag, I love the bag, and I have used it for walks around the neighborhood. However, if the bag is not set up properly or it is carried incorrectly the bag can do more damage to your back and posture if you use it every day. Those bags I prefer to use for day trips, vacations, moving (because I’m a military spouse), etc.

To help break things down a little bit, here is a list of the pros and cons of this gadget:

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • It doesn’t snag the yarn
  • Travel Accessible
  • No runaway yarn
  • Tangle free
  • Depending on the weight and size of the yarn ball, it can fit more than one ball of yarn
  • It’s lightweight
  • It’s made of stainless steal
  • No need to rewind yarn after use
  • Easy to change out WIPs

Cons

  • Fine motor skills/visual impairment - some crafters may find putting the locking pin in place a challenge. Especially if they have shaky hands or poor eyesight.
  • Depending on the weight and size of the yarn ball, it can fit only one ball of yarn
  • If you live outside of Sweden you may have to pay a customs fee (depending on your country)

Conclusion

I am thoroughly enjoying this product! This is exactly what I needed for my busy mom and designer life. I can take it anywhere, it’s lightweight, easy to use, and I can easily change out my WIPs.

The real downside that I see is for my crafters who struggle with fine motor skills or are visually impaired.

Overall, I give The Twister Yarn Holder 4.5/5 yarn skeins. It’s the perfect gadget for me, and I believe every knitter and crocheter should have one. However, I don’t think it will work for everyone.
