Bernat Vintage Christmas Stocking ~ FAQ

Bernat Vintage Christmas Stocking ~ FAQ

When I first started the Bernat Vintage Christmas Stocking videos, almost five years ago, I didn’t think I was going to be making this video. Since releasing those videos, I have received numerous messages and emails asking for help. Some questions took me by surprise; I didn’t know they were questions that needed to be addressed. While other questions, I know I made abundantly clear in my videos. People either skipped over those parts or they didn’t read the description boxes for those videos. Which, okay, no problem. We’ll address those questions here in this video.

#5: How do I get the last 3 sts onto one needle so I can do the Kitchener stitch?

A: On the last round of Knit, continue knitting the 3 sts from needle 1 over to needle 3. End there. Start Kitchener stitch.

#4: My pattern says to CO 61 sts (not 60 sts), should I listen to it?

A: I am not going to lie. This question was a curveball I did not see coming. The person who asked the question found a modified pattern of a different Bernat Christmas Stocking. It has the same shape as the stocking with a different Fair Isle design. After some investigation of the pattern, we decided to stick with the modified pattern and CO 61 sts. What the person did was they added an extra stitch for a few rows so the colors and design can appear even when sewn at the end.

#3: Where can I find the beads?

A: As I have mentioned in my videos, I only do the knitting part of the stocking. So, where to get the beads, what size to get, and how to put them on? I am unsure as you are. However, since several of you have asked about this process, I plan to make a video after I figure out how to do it myself. But until then, I would check local craft stores for beads.

#2: What yarn do you use?

A: This question has been addressed in my original videos as well as in the description boxes. When I post a tutorial video, I do my very best to put a list of the supplies I use in that video down in the description box, including brands and sizes. So if you ever come across one of my tutorial videos and there is something in that video that you like, check out the description box. The list will be there.

Now, shifting to the pattern. The pattern calls for 3oz of worsted weight yarn in red, green, and white (Note: color selections may vary based on the pattern you have). These patterns were actually kits, or ‘pak,’ back then, supplied with their own yarn - 100% Virgin Wool from Bernat’s yarn line.

Whether to use a natural fiber (i.e., wool) or acrylic is entirely up to you. Personally, I use acrylic yarn for this project because that’s what I use. Also, that’s what was accessible to me at the time. Plain and simple. You don’t have to use the exact yarn that I am using. You’re free to use whatever yarn you want and are comfortable with. It’s your project, use whatever yarn you want to use.

#1: Where can I find the pattern? Will you share it with me?

A: I’m going to be honest here. I’ve been chewing on my answer to this question for some time and I am choosing the brutal honesty route. This is going to upset some people because I am redefining the boundary I put in place all those years ago when I first released those videos.

Are you ready for it?

Since releasing the ‘Tips and Tricks’ videos for the Bernat Christmas Stocking (because that’s what they are), I have had several people reach out to me about the pattern. Specifically, helping them to find the pattern. But their intentions say otherwise.

I am not a lawyer and I’m not going to sit here and pretend I fully comprehend copyright and intellectual property laws. But I will put my foot down on this. This pattern is not mine. Let me say it one more time: THIS PATTERN IS NOT MINE!

I did not create it. I did not write it. I did not design the artwork. Therefore, it is not mine to share freely on the internet or to sell. Also, I’m not a public library where you can check out books and patterns for free, then return them once you are done.

Since the release of the first video, I have been open and transparent about how I obtained the pattern. I’ve also said time and time again in my videos and in the description boxes (that no one reads), that I will not share the pattern and I will not make those stockings for anyone else.

Those videos were made to assist knitters who have the pattern. To help comprehend specific parts that are trickier than others, with tips and tricks. Nothing more.

Now, to get to the root of this question: where can I find the pattern?

Where and how you obtain the pattern is up to you. I am not getting involved. But I will say this because I’ve already had one person get tricked by AI: Be on guard. Artificial Intelligence has truly screwed with the fiber arts community. I can’t begin to tell you how many AI generated patterns I see daily. All for a quick buck. Please read through everything, look at the images, and ask for a second opinion before you do anything.

I know that was heavy and I don’t want to leave it there. My DM’s and email are still open if you need assistance with the pattern or you need to clarify something. The reason I’m keeping that open is that I know what it is like to navigate through this pattern alone. I’m willing to be the sounding board, someone you need to talk things through. I know there are people, like myself, who need to talk things out loud with someone as part of their process.

For me, my main person, the one I like to bounce ideas off of and the one I go to when I am thinking through something, is my husband, because he’s here with me the most. Plus, the man has learned a lot about knitting and crocheting in the last 15 years. He knows what questions to ask and isn’t afraid to hold back his opinion on something. But when he isn’t around, I have my mom and sister in my corner for crochet and my best friend, Ally, from college for knitting.

So, if your person is unavailable to talk through the pattern with you. Send me a message, I’ll be glad to talk you through it.

That’s all I have for today. If you have questions or need something clarified, drop them in the comments. Also, hit the like button and subscribe to the channel to be notified when my next video comes out.

Until next time, happy crafting.
